Much of the content of this paper is covered in Wardale's book The Red Devil and Other Tales from the Age of Steam, but having been written so much earlier its author's mood is refreshingly upbeat compared to his later work. However Wardale has warned that the paper contains some fundamental errors which are presumably corrected in his book, so readers beware!!
