The 5AT mailing address has been
taken over by a proxy spammer and is no longer managable. I am thus unable to
receive messages sent to the 5at.co.uk mail server, and ask that in future people
contact me through cje.newman(at)gmail.com.
In order to avoid the same thing happening to that address, I will not provide
HTMLlinks to it from the website. Would anyone who has sent any messages to
the 5at.co.uk email address in recent times please resend their messages to
the above address?
Part
2 of the Engineering Design page updated by amending the use of the future
tense to the past tense in Wardale's description of the work involved in producing
the FDCs.
26th Mar 2008
New Site Map
added with links from each of the Index pages.
.A link has been added to the (South African)
Reef
Steamers' website in acknowledgement of the assistance given to us by
this group (and to Richard Coleby in particular) in sending copies of detailed
drawings of axlebox and horn layout of the SAR Class 25 NC locomotive. Richard
will use these drawings to develop the framing details for the 5AT. The assistance
given to us by the Reef Steamers is greatly appreciated.
2nd Feb 2008
An updated version of Richard Coleby's 3D
drawing of the 5AT cylinder block added to the Design page.. Richard explains
that "there is nothing to show [by way of difference] on the exterior
but when you drive a plane through the casting it shows that some of the 'cuts
of intersection' have not been done, i.e. where the exhaust passage goes through
the saddle endplates."
Links added to News
and Links pages to BBC website that is offering
downloads of the "Steam Driven" broadcast from July 2006.
26th Oct 2007
News page
updated with a (brief) report of a 5AT Planning Meeting held in Salt, Staffordshire,
on 14th Oct 2007, and a separate report on Alan Fozard's and Chris Newman's
attendance at a meeting of the Bevil Club on 18th Oct 2007.
Copy of Chapter VI "Brown
Coal Dust Firing for Locomotives" from a book titled "Brown
Coal" by H. Herman (one-time State. Director of Geological Survey) published
in 1952 by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, Australia, added,
with links from References and Links page and
from FAQ 14 page. As noted on the FAQ page, pulverized
coal combustion does not offer significant environmental gains, however it
does offer major advantages over lump coal combustion - for instance, elimination
of problems associated with the "grate limit", clinker formation,
spark emissions and ash disposal. Stoking could also be automated much more
easily making one-man operation a real possibility. Effectively it would have
all the advantages that oil-firing confers. H. Herman's paper describes successful
trials of the technology in Australia, Germany and the UK from the 1920s through
to early the 50s.

add to the list.
24th Jun 2007
Links page updated
with new section providing links to papers covering the (unending and endlessly
fascinating) debate about the comparative merits of steam and diesel traction.
I have added links to some new paper and to some rediscovered ones, and have
I also moved a couple of "old" links into it. I also intend to add
a copy of H. F. Brown's 1960 paper titled "Economic Results of Diesel
Electric Motive Power on the Railways of the United States of America"
as soon as I obtain one. I hope I will be forgiven for including one or two
papers of my own. I have not done so for self-aggandizement but to push forward
the idea that steam is still an economically viable form of traction in certain
circumstances (especially where coal and labour costs are low), and to encourage
others to participate in promoting discussion of the subject.

interest and the correspondence has been included specifically at the request
of Dave Wardale.

or contact ian.gaylor@steam-loco-design.co.uk
.
Calculations page updated with reference to one additional FDC: FDC 18 "Performance
Predictions" in which Wardale has (with careful qualification) used two

for the 5AT and compared the results with his own hand calculations. Some
pertinent paragraphs from the calculations are copied in the notes at the bottom of the page.

4th Feb 2004
For the benefit of newcomers to this site and
for additional information which does not always appear in the other pages
of the website, I have added a Newletter page
listing all past (and future) newsletters that I have sent out to people who
have expressed interest in the project. Access is via the News
page in which links to each newsletter have been added in reverse date order.
In order to give readers a better idea of the
people who are currently involved in the project, I have added a brief introduction
to each member of the project's present "Leading Group" to the Who's
Who page.
The pages titled "Design Philosophy"
and "Design Principals" have been deleted and their contents combined
into a new page called "The Engineering Design"
(to be found in the main Index). A new section has been introduced as a leader
to this page, titled "Part 1 Detail Design" which explains the challenges
that will be involved in undertaking this most critical aspect of the project's
implementation.
On both the revised Who's
Who page and at the end of the first part of the The
Engineering Design page, I have inserted a request that anyone who is
interested in the possibility of becoming involved in the implementation of
the project (whether in an engineering or administrative capacity) let us know, and at the same time send us a
copy of their CV (preferably in the format given). CVs that are sent to us will be treated in
the strictest confidence.

a plug on the website since a second print-run is now available. I have included
details of where the book may be purchased.
A few other minor improvements and a couple of
additional illustrations on some of the old pages.
